The Pelican Award is presented to a
graduate of the University who has contributed significantly to
the development of the University or has made an outstanding contribution
to Jamaica. This is the most prestigious award given by the UWI
Alumni Association.
The first recipient of this
honour was Professor Ken Magnus for his work in Chemistry in 1966.
Since then, twenty-nine such awards have been presented to graduates
in several fields.
In 1994 at the gathering of the graduates, six
such awards were presented and for our fiftieth anniversary, five
were presented.
The recipients included
Derek Walcott, Dr. Barry Chevannes, Marjorie Whylie and our Vice
Chancellor, Professor Rex Nettleford.

the graduate community and should be submitted to the alumni office

The 2007 recipients of the Pelican Award are:

This year the Pelican Award from the UWI Alumni
Associatioin (Jamaica Chapter) was bestowed on three distinguished
gentlemen at the awards ceremony honouring Prof. Leslie Robinson.
The Awardees are:
Prof. Alfred Sangster - For outstanding
service to the University of the West Indies and University of Technology
(formerly C.A.S.T) and also in the field of Public Affairs.
Prof. Errol Miller - For outstanding
service to the University of the West Indies and also in the field
of Education and Public Affairs
Prof. Renn Holness - For excellence
in the field of neurosurgery and also in the area of Medical Education
The 2005 nrecipients of the Pelican Awards are
Dr. Deanna Ashley - For outstanding
work in the field of Medicine
Miss Stephney Ferguson - For
service to the University Community and contribution to public service
Miss Bevon Morrison - For excellence
in the field of science and technology.

the theme "Great Things for
UWI."

Dr. Donald Christian, CD - Pelican Awardee with Dr. Knox Hagley,

Dr. Donald Christian, CD was
honoured for a lifetime of unwavering commitment and distinguished
service to the Department of Medicine, the University Hospital,
the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean region.

This year, the
prestigious Pelican Award from the UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica
Chapter): the Guild of Graduates was conferred on four outstanding
women at the Hilton Kingston Hotel at the annual awards ceremony
under the distinguished patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. the Hon.

The Guild
of Graduates' Year 2001 Pelican Awardees: Father Richard Ho Lung
and Ambassador Courtney Walsh OJ.
The UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter),
recently held their annual Pelican Awards under the theme "Humanity,
Humility and Excellence" and honoured two great Jamaicans
who exemplify these qualities: Father Richard Ho Lung and
Ambassador Courtney Walsh OJ.
The Pelican Award is the most prestigious
award given by the The UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter).

Beverley Anderson Manley CD was awarded for her contribution
to Gender and Third World Developmental Issues. She is a Human Resource
Development Consultant, International Gender Consultant and Motivational
Speaker. Mrs. Manley has represented Jamaica on the United Nations
Commission on the Status of Women and the OAS/CIM.
Prof. the Hon. Ludlow Lawson
Douglas OJ, CD was awarded for his extensive contribution to
Regional Medicine. He is currently Professor of Urology at the University
of the West Indies and he pioneered kidney transplantation in the
Caribbean.
H.E. Patrick Lipton Robinson
CD was awarded for his significant contribution to International
Law. He is currently a Judge at the United Nations International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, at the Hague, the Netherlands.
