associations. Although remaining and
independent and autonomous body. UWIMAA
members receive University and Guild Plus
benefits, as well as representation at the
University Council level though the UWIAA.

The UWI Medical Alumni Association, Canada Chapter is pleased to announce that the 2004 Sir Harry Annamunthodo Prize in Surgery has been awarded to Dr. Karina Hew of the Class of 2004.

GG Appoints New Chairman to the National Early Childhood Commission
Dr. Maureen Samms-Vaughan, a Senior Lecturer in Child Health at UWI Mona and a Consultant Developmental and Behavioural Paediatrician has been appointed Chairman of the National Early Childhood Commission by the Governor General. Her term of office is six
years in the first instance. The Commission's functions are to advise the Minister of Education on policy matters for early childhood development in Jamaica and to prepare programme plans, and monitor and evaluate the implementation on these programmes.

Dr. Coard Promoted to the Post of Professor
Dr. Kathleen Coard has been promoted to the post of Professor in the Dept. of Pathology. Dr. Coard obtained the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the UWI in 1978. In 1985 she earned the Doctor of Medicine degree in Pathology from the UWI. Professor Coard has a strong record of distinguished original work. Much of her research has focused on specific medical problems facing the population in Jamaica, which are of practical concern to the local medical community and she has provided
epidemiologic and clinicopathologic data on a number of diseases.

Dr. Etienne Appointed Assistant Director of PAHO
Dr. Carissa Etienne (Class of '76) has been appointed Assistant Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Dr. Etienne, a General Practioner and Medical School Professor, as a strong background in public health. A national of Dominica, she holds a medical degree from the University of the West Indies and a Master's degree in Community Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Christie Elected to U.S. Fellowship
Dr. Celia Christie, Professor and Chair of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona has been elected as Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Professor Christie is being recognized as someone who has achieved professional excellence in infectious diseases and related fields..
